About The Position

A Patient Care Tech (PCT) at ProMedica plays a vital role in the health and safety of patients, assisting the healthcare team by caring for patients, performing clerical services, and complying with standards, procedures, and policies. PCTs interact with patients, visitors, and co-workers, acting as ambassadors for ProMedica. The role involves assisting the patient care team with exams, procedures, obtaining patient data, and other direct patient care processes. Additionally, PCTs ensure an appropriate stock of supplies and equipment is available and functioning properly. Tasks also include scheduling procedures, coordinating admission, discharge, and transfer processes, answering phones, taking messages, directing calls, and picking up and delivering specimens, documents, and other items to contribute to operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent plus EMT/Paramedic, 2nd year nursing student, CNA, MA, or healthcare related higher education training.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and telephone etiquette.
  • Ability to perform basic math and must have basic computer skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a changing environment and be open to new ideas.
  • Ability to function quickly in stressful situations.
  • Must have medical terminology and the ability to operate diagnostic equipment.
  • Must be a Notary in the State of Michigan (OB only).
  • Minimal one year experience in an acute care setting delivering patient care.
  • BLS, System Approved De-escalation training per unit requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of college education in the healthcare field.
  • IV/Phlebotomy skills, basic telemetry, ability to use safe patient handling equipment.
  • 2 years of experience in an acute care setting providing patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Applies the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served (i.e.: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric), coordinated and delegated by licensed nursing personnel.
  • Obtains patient data, including vital signs, height, weight, and I and O measurements and documents on the daily nursing assessment sheet or communicates results to the assigned RN.
  • Notifies RN of abnormal vitals or PGLUs immediately.
  • Assists physicians and nursing staff with examinations, procedures, and other processes related to direct patient care depending on assigned department, including but not limited to: Venipuncture, point of care testing including newborn screening, hearing, and CCHD testing, patient transport, assist patients with ADLs, assist patients with ambulation, 12 lead EKG’s, initiation of cardiac monitoring, CPR, and urinary catheterization.
  • Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures proper functioning of equipment, including initial cleaning of instruments.
  • Performs communication and coordination duties related to scheduling procedures, along with coordinating admission, discharge, transfer, and death.
  • Collects data, photocopies information, answers telephone, takes messages, directs calls, and enters information into the computer.
  • Picks up and delivers specimens, documents, and other items.
  • Supports department during crisis by functioning as liaison with other departments and the public.
  • Prepares and maintains patient records according to standards/policy.
  • Performs any other job related to duties as indicated.
