The position involves assisting the nursing staff with the daily routine and functions of the nursing unit. Responsibilities include transporting patients, discharging patients, passing fresh water, assisting with personal hygiene, supporting activities of daily living, checking and passing meal trays, and answering patient calls. The role also requires conducting hourly rounds on assigned patients and reporting pertinent observations, changes, and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate personnel. Clerical duties related to the coordination of the unit and patient care are also part of the job, including updating the bed status board, managing rental beds, tracking work orders, and notifying physician consults. The position provides clerical direction to new staff, students, and volunteers, confers with departments regarding scheduling of patient activities and procedures, and prepares and updates patient records. Additional responsibilities include obtaining records according to policies, answering phones, interacting with ancillary departments, facilitating patient testing, paging physicians, and completing transfers. The role emphasizes patient safety through fall and restraint reduction, obtaining vital signs, weight, height, intake and output, specimens, blood glucose, and EKGs, and documenting as appropriate. The individual must maintain unit and nursing station supplies, complete requisitions on time, and ensure proper stock levels. The position also involves maintaining standards of nursing care and following established charge procedures for patient charge items. Screening patients, visitors, employees, and others upon entrance into buildings is also required.
