About The Position

UPMC Hamot is looking for a casual Patient Care Technician in the Float Pool! Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience. Responsibilities The Patient Care Technician provides direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and is an integral member of the healthcare team. This role supports patient safety, comfort, and clinical outcomes through effective communication, technical skills, and compassionate care. Patient Care & Clinical Support Assist with patient procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and transporting patients. Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Perform UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities, including vital signs, weights, intake and output, blood glucose monitoring, point-of-care testing, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, specimen collection, Foley care, and hospital-acquired condition/patient safety indicators. Report changes in patient condition and provide timely feedback to the RN. Provide patient and family education under the direction of the RN. Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy. Access to medications is limited to distribution of medications to the nurse. Technical & Advanced Skills Perform at least four (4) BU-identified skills as required, which may include: Phlebotomy/venipuncture 12-lead EKG Simple dressings Foley catheter removal Peripheral IV removal Bladder scanning Straight catheterization Based on department needs, maintain competency in one or more advanced skills, such as basic arrhythmia recognition or NG tube clamping/removal. Documentation & Unit Support Document care accurately and timely in the medical record according to established procedures. Perform assigned work efficiently and complete clerical functions as needed. Participate in universal unit activities, including responding to call lights and phones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Report equipment malfunctions promptly to the appropriate department. Professional Practice & Teamwork Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team. Establish and maintain professional, respectful, and collaborative working relationships. Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions. Support a safe work environment by adhering to safety policies, standard precautions, and hospital procedures. Strictly comply with all policies related to patient care and confidential hospital information. Quality, Growth & Accountability Participate in quality improvement initiatives and department-based projects. Take responsibility for assigned duties and approach challenges proactively. Constructively receive feedback, identify learning needs, and take action to improve knowledge and skills. Request assistance with planning and prioritization as needed and participate in self-review as directed by leadership.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet one of the following experience or education requirements: One (1) year of general healthcare experience; or Six (6) months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA, with Patient Care Technician (PCT) competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion for candidates with less than one year of experience; or Enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physician Assistant (PA), or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation; or Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences–related field.
  • Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class required.
  • Successful completion of eRecord training required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required, based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components, within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 34 clearance required.

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program, preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
