About The Position

UPMC Hamot is hiring a full-time Patient Care Technician to join our CVICU! The UPMC Hamot CVICU is a 16-bed unit on the second floor of the new patient care tower. The exceptional care provided in this unit contributes to UPMC Hamot's certification as a Comprehensive Cardiac Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. CVICU also holds the distinction as a Gold Level Beacon Award of Excellence recipient, representing not only excellence in patient care but also an incredible work environment. Some of our specific patient populations include: Cardiac Surgery: CABG, MVR, AVR, TVR, TAVR Thoracic Surgery Vascular Surgery and Minimally Invasive Interventions Cardiogenic Shock Cardiac Arrest and Critical Arrhythmias Cardiac Assist Devices (IABP, Impella) Ischemic Strokes Hemorrhagic Strokes (without intervention) This position is full-time, rotating day/night shifts. Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One of the following:
  • 1 year of general healthcare experience
  • 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion (if less than 1 year experience)
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA or related healthcare training program with at least one clinical rotation completed
  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field
  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class
  • Successful completion of eRecord training
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • EMT or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in EMT/Paramedic program preferred
  • ACLS preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient care, procedures, and activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Supports physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Reports patient status changes and provides feedback to RN.
  • Performs core nursing assistant tasks: blood glucose checks, weights, vital signs, intake/output, specimen collection, Foley care.
  • Completes at least four advanced tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV removal.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions and communicates effectively with other departments.
  • Responds to call lights, phones, passes meal trays, and transports patients.
  • Accepts feedback, identifies learning needs, and seeks assistance for prioritization.
  • Provides patient/family instruction under RN direction; applies/removes restraints per protocol.
  • Maintains clear communication, cultural sensitivity, and workplace safety.
  • Builds professional relationships with accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment.
  • Adheres to all patient care and hospital policies, including safety and standard precautions.
  • Supports departmental changes, projects, and quality initiatives.
  • Documents accurately and completes clerical tasks as needed.
  • Achieves competency in advanced skills as required: phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube clamping/removal.
  • Access to medications limited to distribution to nurse.
