About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) role at UPMC Hamot involves providing essential patient care in the 4 South Trauma unit. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of general healthcare experience or 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion.
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation.
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class. Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care, assists with procedures and daily activities, physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, and reports changes to the RN.
  • Performs core nursing assistant tasks (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care) and at least four additional tasks (phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal).
  • Reports equipment malfunctions, communicates effectively with other departments, and maintains professional relationships.
  • Contributes to unit activities (responding to call lights, telephones, passing meal trays, transporting patients).
  • Receives feedback, identifies learning needs, improves skills, and participates in self-review.
  • Provides patient and family instruction under RN direction, applies/removes restraints per protocol.
  • Communicates clearly with the healthcare team, understands cultural diversity, supports workplace safety, and maintains productive relationships.
  • Adheres to patient care policies, complies with safety procedures, and documents in medical records.
  • Suggests and supports departmental changes, assumes responsibility, and supports projects and quality initiatives.
  • Performs core nursing assistant responsibilities (ADLs, point of care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application, HAC & PSI prevention, simple dressings, restraints, bladder scan, specimen collections, ticket to ride).
  • Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills (phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tubes clamping/removal).
