The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at VCU Health is the largest and most advanced in the region and has earned the highest distinction of a Level 4 accreditation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. The patients admitted to the EMU seek evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of seizures. The nature of inducing seizures to gather data is inherently dangerous, which is why nurse to patient ratio is lower than other non-ICU areas. This unit boasts Epileptologists, specialized Nurse Practitioners, and EEG technicians who monitor the patients and give feedback to nurses in real time. Our culture revolves around collaboration and teamwork from all disciplines to provide patient centered care. The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner.
