About The Position

The Patient Care Specialist (PCS) delivers direct and indirect patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) and accepts tasks from various care team members, including physicians, advanced practice providers, RNs, LPNs, and MAs, to address patient and family needs. In the direct care capacity, the PCS provides hands-on care, gathers and records patient data, and relays information to patients, families, and the care team. For indirect patient care, the PCS contributes to maintaining the care environment and handles unit-specific clerical tasks. This role demands strong organizational skills, teamwork, and a dedication to ongoing learning, quality, and excellence. Proficiency in multiple computer applications is essential. The PCS will interact with patients across all life stages and with diverse medical conditions.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age prior to start date
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English
  • Basic computer skills and experience with other technological devices (i.e. cell phone, laptop, etc.)
  • Ability to work irregular hours (days, evenings, holidays, weekends)
  • Self-motivated/independent
  • Able and willing to work with all populations served
  • Working knowledge of computers and software applications
  • Demonstrated ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, accurate and efficient
  • Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs is required: American Heart Association or American Red Cross (If a candidate does not currently have the required certification, education and testing will be included as part of the orientation and training program)

Nice To Haves

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalency
  • PCS, HUC, MA, NS, Ward Clerk experience
  • Demonstration of medical terminology

Responsibilities

  • Provide care (direct care role)
  • Collect and document patient care data
  • Communicate information to patients, families, and care team members
  • Support the unit by helping to maintain the environment of care
  • Perform unit-based clerical duties
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and teamwork
  • Utilize multiple computer applications
  • Work with patients throughout the life span with multiple conditions
