Akron General’s 5200B Orthopaedic/Surgical Unit is a post-surgical unit that specializes in knee and hip replacement, shoulder, ankle, and spinal surgeries. Patients in this unit require immediate and frequent mobilization, which decreases their hospital length of stay and post-surgical complications. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant, you play an integral role in ensuring patients continue receiving the best treatment possible. You will find a welcoming and hands-on environment where caregivers encourage education, mutual support and teamwork. Each day, you have numerous opportunities to make a difference in your community. A caregiver in this position works evenings from 3:00PM – 11:30PM, including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or during new hire period
  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills
  • Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered
  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required

Nice To Haves

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)
  • One year of recent acute care experience

Responsibilities

  • Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies.
  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height.
  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction, removal of urinary Foley Catheters and other therapeutic measures.
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.
  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.
  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area.
  • Report to appropriate nursing personnel pertinent information including any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient.
  • Assist in keeping patient rooms in order, report equipment that is out of order, clean equipment and inventory and distribute unit linen and supplies.
  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.
