The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse, performing various patient care tasks. These include collecting patient data, providing personal care, conducting point of care testing (such as whole blood glucose), turning, positioning, and mobilizing patients. PCAs also assist with patient needs, focusing on progress toward discharge and during transitions within acute care. They are trained to perform technical procedures like blood draws and electrocardiography. The role involves collaborating with Material's Coordinators to ensure the availability, stocking, and storage of supplies, and participating in maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment. PCAs may also serve as activity companions for patients requiring one-on-one observation and are responsible for assisting the caregiving team in delivering competent, compassionate patient care.
