About The Position

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is an integral member of the clinical care team and provides direct patient care and support activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse. This role promotes patient-centered care within assigned clinical units and supports safe, high-quality healthcare delivery across Medical-Surgical and specialty units.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • AHA HeartSaver or BLS certification (required)
  • COVID vaccination documentation (required)
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written)
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, problem-solve, and exercise sound judgment
  • Flexibility to float across Medical-Surgical units
  • Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform patient care tasks
  • Comfort working in fast-paced clinical environments with diverse patient populations
  • Hospital experience is required

Nice To Haves

  • 3 to 9 months of healthcare experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Measure, record, and document patient vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations, intake/output, and other assigned data
  • Obtain and document patient pain ratings (as a fifth vital sign, excluding Pediatrics)
  • Perform clinical procedures such as specimen collection, venipuncture, EKGs, application of compression devices, post-mortem care, and skin integrity maintenance
  • Prepare for procedures and assist Registered Nurses as needed
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including feeding, bathing, toileting, oral care, and mobility
  • Orient patients to the clinical environment and assist with ambulation and all levels of mobilization
  • Perform one-to-one or close observation for patient safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention
  • Maintain isolation precautions per established protocols and RN direction
  • Deliver and collect meal trays at bedside
  • Assist patients with menu selection and nutritional supplements
  • Report changes in dietary intake to RN or Dietitian
  • Maintain accurate transmission of dietary orders and updates
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and functional patient environment
  • Assist with room upkeep, bed stripping, trash removal, and patient comfort
  • Perform scheduled purposeful rounding focusing on toileting, comfort, positioning, and pain awareness
  • Document rounding and notify RN of missed rounds or identified concerns
  • Answer patient call systems and route requests appropriately
  • Greet visitors, answer phones, and escort visitors as needed
  • Utilize communication tools (e.g., Vocera) according to established protocols
  • Transport patients, specimens, and equipment as required
  • Operate pneumatic tube systems when necessary
  • Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge activities
  • Assemble and update medical records
  • Maintain unit supplies and equipment
  • Perform emergency cleanup, transport, and discharge bedmaking as needed
  • Support shared duties across ICU and specialty units
