About The Position

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is a vital member of the clinical care team, providing patient-centered support and assisting licensed nursing staff in delivering high-quality care. This role involves direct patient care, assistance with daily living activities, performance of assigned clinical tasks, specimen collection, and maintenance of a safe and clean patient environment across medical-surgical, telemetry, and critical care units.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Active BLS (AHA or HeartSaver) certification
  • EKG and Phlebotomy skills
  • Hospital experience required
  • Experience in Surg/Tele/Critical Care units
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, solve problems, and exercise sound judgment
  • Physical stamina and manual dexterity

  • 3–9 months of prior healthcare or hospital experience

Responsibilities

  • Measure and record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respirations
  • Document intake/output and other assigned patient data
  • Assess and report patient pain levels as appropriate
  • Perform clinical procedures such as: Specimen collection Venipuncture (phlebotomy) EKGs Application of compression devices Post-mortem care
  • Skin integrity and pressure injury prevention
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including feeding, bathing, oral hygiene, toileting, mobility, and ambulation
  • Prepare patient rooms and equipment for procedures and assist nursing staff during procedures
  • Provide one-to-one or close observation for patients requiring safety monitoring
  • Maintain isolation precautions under RN direction
  • Conduct purposeful rounding focused on toileting, comfort, positioning, and pain management, with proper documentation
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient environment
  • Perform linen changes, room tidying, and trash removal
  • Report equipment malfunctions or facility issues promptly
  • Deliver and collect meal trays
  • Assist patients with menu selection
  • Prepare and mix nutritional supplements
  • Report dietary concerns to nursing staff
  • Respond to patient call systems and relay messages appropriately
  • Greet and assist patients and visitors in a professional manner
  • Utilize communication systems (e.g., Vocera) per facility protocol
  • Assist with documentation, reports, and updating communication boards/logs
  • Transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher
  • Transport specimens and operate pneumatic tube systems
  • Assist with assembling medical records
  • Support admission, transfer, and discharge processes
  • Strip rooms or cubicles and perform emergency clean-up
  • Prepare discharge beds
  • Maintain unit supplies and equipment
