About The Position

The Patient Care Associate plays a vital role in the clinical care team at Mount Sinai West, focusing on patient-centered care within the Specialty Service. This position involves supporting registered nurses in various patient care activities, ensuring a safe and clean environment, and assisting patients with daily living activities. The role is essential for maintaining high standards of patient care and comfort.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (graduate or equivalent).
  • Certificate of completion of a medical assistant/patient care assistant with skills in venipuncture and EKG.
  • Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred.
  • BLS or BCLS Certification from American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served.
  • Performs and records patient's vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respirations.
  • Documents intake and output and other data as assigned.
  • Obtains patient's rating on pain scales as a fifth vital sign in all areas except Pediatrics.
  • Performs clinical procedures, such as specimen collection, venipuncture, EKG, application of compression devices, post-mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity.
  • Sets up for selected procedures and assists RNs accordingly.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing, and/or toileting.
  • Orients patients to the clinical environment.
  • Assists patients with ambulation and all levels of mobilization.
  • Assists with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients, and maintaining accurate systems for dietary orders.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and functional environment, ensuring comfortable movement of the patient.
  • Performs one-to-one observation or close observation status of patients for safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention.
  • Maintains isolation status for patients under the direction of an RN and according to set procedures.
  • Performs scheduled rounding on patients with emphasis on toileting needs, comfort, positioning, and pain awareness.
  • Documents on rounding log and notifies RN if rounding has not been completed.
  • Utilizes Vocera system according to sign in/sign out protocol where activated.
  • Greets visitors and answers telephones promptly and courteously, escorting visitors to appropriate areas when necessary.
  • Answers Patient Call System and refers calls to appropriate staff.
  • Transports patients to stretchers or wheelchairs as required.
  • Delivers and collects trays at bedside and performs emergency clean-up.
