The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) will work under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the General Pediatrics unit. This role is crucial in providing direct patient care and support during the assigned work period, which is during the night shift. The PCA will be responsible for collecting patient data, performing personal care tasks, and assisting with point of care testing, such as whole blood glucose monitoring. Additionally, the PCA will help turn, position, and mobilize patients, ensuring their comfort and safety, particularly as they progress toward discharge from acute care. The PCA is trained to perform technical procedures, including blood draws and electrocardiography, which are essential for patient monitoring and care. In this role, the PCA will also collaborate with Materiel's Coordinators to ensure the availability of necessary resources for patient care, including the stocking and storage of supplies. The PCA plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment for patients, which is essential for effective care delivery. They may also serve as activity companions for patients requiring observation, ensuring that all patients receive competent and compassionate care throughout their stay. The PCA will collect pertinent data related to the patient's health, including vital signs, height, weight, and food and fluid intake/output. They will report any abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse and participate in care planning and nursing report processes. The PCA will also incorporate patient and family rights into care decisions, ensuring that they are informed and involved in their care. Personal care tasks will include bathing, oral care, skin care, and assistance with eating, hydration, grooming, dressing, and toileting. Safe patient handling techniques will be employed to support ambulation and the use of assistive devices. The PCA will document all care provided in the patient record, contributing to the overall care plan and patient progress tracking.
