About The Position

The Patient Care Assistant at Knox Community Hospital is responsible for delivering direct and indirect patient care across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics. This role involves working under the supervision of registered nurses or licensed practical nurses, ensuring the provision of safe and quality care while adhering to organizational policies and professional standards. The position requires effective communication and collaboration with healthcare team members, as well as accurate documentation of patient care activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • High School or Trade School students may be considered if their course of study could lead to full-time employment and they can legally work the hours necessary for the position.
  • STNA (State Tested Nursing Assistant Certificate) or MA (Medical Assistant Certificate) preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR (BLS) certification required.
  • Palliative Care Training within 1 year of hire for Medical Palliative Care Unit.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the provision of safe patient care under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.
  • Perform observation and documentation as directed by RN/LPN.
  • Assist in positioning, lifting, and transporting patients to other departments, as well as aiding with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene.
  • Apply oxygen but do not adjust the rate.
  • Perform, report, and document patient blood glucose levels per capillary fingerstick.
  • Provide water, linens, and nourishment for patients and document accordingly.
  • Feed patients when required and document the assistance provided.
  • Obtain, report, and document vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, respiration, pulse, and oxygen saturation.
  • Obtain, report, and document intake and output (I & O).
  • Obtain, report, and document weights and heights of patients.
  • Report and document elimination details.
  • Collect, label, and send specimens to the laboratory.
  • Answer call lights promptly and communicate effectively with team members and other healthcare providers.
  • Accept delegated responsibilities for unit activities on assigned shifts.
  • Document all aspects of patient care provided and maintain patient records in a timely manner.
  • Provide patients and family members with information as appropriate.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new and tenured Patient Care Assistants under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
