About the position

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) III performs duties to enhance patient experience while maintaining patient comfort and a safe patient environment. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH which promotes an on-going partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age-specific. All direct patient care is under the supervision of and is delegated by the Registered Nurse according to the guidelines as set out by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Additionally, a PCA III exhibits critical thinking skills in escalating concerns, and has the ability to competently complete delegated tasks without coaching and/or direct oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Performs aspects of clinical care as assigned and instructed by the RN per Ohio Board of Nursing guidelines for delegation.
  • Meets clinical platform of skills guided by the PCA Core Skills Competency Checklist.
  • Able to perform clinical skills such as EKGs, Phlebotomy, Ostomy Care, and obtaining Urine Specimen from a Foley Catheter.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
  • Demonstrates top behavioral competencies established by Nursing Leadership for Patient Care Assistants at an advanced level.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, families, peers, and leadership as a member of the Unit leadership team.
  • Seeks to serve customers and actively seeks new and creative ways to respond to patient demands.
  • Fosters collaboration among the team to solve problems and proactively create solutions.
  • Leads in Unit councils and/or committees, while also leading CIT projects and/or other initiatives.
  • Acts as a primary preceptor and mentor for new PCAs.
  • Monitors and supports scheduling and patient workload with leadership.
  • Provides and promotes individual patient and unit safety, identifying and escalating safety hazards.
  • Provides comfort and personal hygiene for patients, documenting according to policy.
  • Orients patients and families to the hospital environment and services provided.
  • Leads communication of Unit wide updates and network wide updates to the team.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate/Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience in a related field.
  • Pursuing an Associate degree and/or some higher education preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, and EMR.
  • Certification in AHA Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (required before patient contact).
