About The Position

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) provides clinical patient care support, and identified nursing procedures, in a caring, safe, and efficient manner, under the supervision and delegation of the Registered Nurse. In collaboration with patients and families (as defined by the patient) the PCA is responsible for the care of the patient. The PCA demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy and other delegated nursing procedures, in addition to the other essential functions of the role while adhering to and being supportive of the department of Nursing mission and philosophy.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Delivers successful service to internal and external customers by adhering to critical success standards.
  • Demonstrates accountability and commitment to quality and safety standards.
  • Provides exceptional customer service and ensures a positive work environment.
  • Performs delegated and ancillary basic nursing skills, including activities of daily living.
  • Monitors patient condition and provides nutritional support.
  • Communicates performance of skills to the patient’s Nurse and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Collects specimens and uses specialized equipment such as bladder scanners and electronic vital signs machines.
  • Documents and reports data including vital signs, oxygen saturation, height, weight, intake and output, and blood glucose testing.
  • Performs routine tasks such as simple non-sterile dressing changes and external care to urinary catheters.
  • Administers feedings via a gastrostomy tube under supervision of a nurse.
  • Performs patient admission and discharge procedures and unit environmental organizational tasks.
  • Documents point-of-care testing, patient mobility, hygiene, grooming, and dietary needs.
  • Transports patients and specimens as needed.
  • Performs clerical duties for the unit.
  • Participates in training, development, and continuing education activities.
  • Demonstrates appropriate emergency and patient safety procedures.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families.
  • Participates in department-based activities and initiatives to improve safety.
  • Communicates effectively with members of the health care team, patients, and families.
