The primary roles of the Patient Assistant are insurance benefit verification and scheduling patient appointments and surgeries based on insurance requirements, as well as obtaining insurance prior authorizations. The primary role of the Patient Advocate is to serve as a liaison to the program and its patients, to address questions and concerns, and navigate the care pathway of the patient. The advocate provides excellence in customer service, while maintaining business efficiency, and minimizing medical liability. The advocate is responsible for very close follow-up with patients during each step of the requirements for participation in the program, and must be available to patients and the program physicians via phone, fax, and email to ensure prompt service. The advocates role is to explain the requirements of the program to the patient, in accordance with their insurance requirements, which will vary by specific policy. The advocate should also be able to field communication from outside primary care and specialty physician offices regarding patient referrals and/or needs. The advocate will be responsible for scheduling bariatric procedures and associated pre-operative appointments with both the hospital and the surgeon's office. The advocate will be responsible for all prior authorization submissions and communication with insurance companies for the bariatric program. The advocate will also work with the bariatric coordinator to identify, analyze, and resolve and work flow/process problems. The advocate will attend meetings as needed to assist with the ongoing Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence requirements (MBSAQIP verification). The advocate is responsible for maintaining all records required for COE verification. The advocate may receive other duties as assigned to assist with program growth, development, and COE verification.

Requirements

  • Education: Associate or Bachelor's degree with courses related to the health sciences field.
  • Previous medical office experience required.
  • Previous experience with office scheduling, insurance verifications and authorizations, and patient communication preferred.
  • Minimum License and Certificates Required: BLS Required

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the scheduling of procedures with physicians, physician offices, and anesthesiologist according to established scheduling guidelines.
  • Responsible for performing all functions of patient admissions including registration, tracking, pre-registration, insurance verification, proper use of Medifax for Medicare/Medicaid patients, and is familiar with and follows hospital policies and procedures established by the Admitting and Financial Departments.
  • Communicates additions, cancellations, and special requests of schedule to all appropriate parties.
  • Ensures that necessary equipment is available for all scheduled procedures.
