About The Position

The Patient Accounts Collector is a key member of the Finance/Billing team responsible for ensuring maximum reimbursement through effective coding, billing, and collection of services rendered. This hybrid role requires occasional on-site presence at the Atwater location and involves maintaining patient confidentiality, managing billing records, and demonstrating knowledge of insurance payer types and coding processes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2 - 3 years experience in office/medical billing
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Patient Accounts Biller or equivalent
  • Bilingual required in some positions
  • Knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)
  • Knowledge of International Classification of Disease (ICD-9)
  • General knowledge of office procedures and equipment.

  • General knowledge of Commercial, Medi-Cal, Medicare and 3rd party billing and collection.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality pertaining to patient care.
  • Demonstrate telephone etiquette with patients and third parties.
  • Participate in achieving team and departmental goals.
  • Follow department and company policies.
  • Complete front office certification training.
  • Update and maintain patient demographic and billing record database.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of insurance payer types and carriers.
  • Process incoming Explanation of Benefits and Remittance Advice from payers.
  • Make judgments on claims follow-up and processing.
  • Produce Open Aging items reports for accounts over 120 days.
  • Correct failed claims edits and re-open failed claims.
  • Write off account balances exceeding specific program limits.
  • Identify correct billing provider set-up in MegaView.
  • Determine account credit balances and correction processes.
  • Coordinate patient payment plans and follow-up.
  • Submit electronic claims and download electronic remittances.
  • Act as a trainer/mentor to Patient Account Representatives and Billers.
  • Assist in other assigned job duties.
