About The Position

The Patient Access Specialist is responsible for managing multiple hospital entry points, providing essential registration functions across various departments including the Emergency Department and Outpatient Surgery. This role involves pre-registration, registration, and verification of patient information, as well as payment collection and interfacing with insurers. The specialist must maintain compliance with regulatory guidelines and promote departmental objectives through quality performance and cooperation. The position requires cross-training in various administrative functions and the ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment, including weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum one year experience in patient access, registration, billing, cash collection, insurance, and/or pre-certification in a medical environment preferred.
  • One year of customer service experience in any field preferred.
  • One year of clerical experience in a medical office setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of insurance plans and coordination of benefits.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work in a stressful environment with changing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact with individuals of all cultures and authority levels.
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge and basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide registration-related functions at multiple hospital entry points.
  • Conduct pre-registration, registration, and verification activities for patients.
  • Gather and process patient demographic and financial information.
  • Identify sources of payment and collect payments from patients and insurers.
  • Maintain knowledge of Federal and State regulatory compliance guidelines and joint commission requirements.
  • Promote departmental objectives through cooperation and quality performance.
  • Cross-train in multiple administrative support functions and registration points.
  • Assist patients physically into the registration area or provide bedside registration as needed.
