About The Position

The Patient Access Representative at Stony Brook Medicine plays a crucial role in supporting the Revenue Cycle, Compliance, and Patient Experience by efficiently managing patient registration and financial screening processes. This position is essential for ensuring a smooth patient throughput at the Cancer Center, where representatives greet patients, verify insurance information, and collect payments, all while providing exceptional customer service.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree with one year working experience in a customer service, public health, medical practice, or hospital revenue cycle role.
  • In lieu of degree, two years' experience in a hospital ambulatory or specialty medical practice, front end revenue cycle or other related industry requiring skills which demonstrate experience in payment collection, insurance reimbursement, or access services.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, computing, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Experience and expertise in speaking with customers and working well with persons who are under stress.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Familiarity with medical insurance benefits, demonstrated through experience with EMR computerized registration / Financial / IT systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Previous patient access services experience in an Oncology practice.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and visitors in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Efficiently manage arrival processes for a high volume of appointments across multi-disciplinary service areas at the Cancer Center.
  • Activate Lab orders and secure all required regulatory consents at patient arrival.
  • Obtain complete and accurate patient demographic and insurance information, ensuring demographic information is current and coverage verified.
  • Complete thorough data assessment of all required patient information through interview and other methods to support goals of patient safety and registration integrity.
  • Provide financial guidance and excellence in Financial Care to patients and their representatives by providing information about their health care insurance coverage and cost share responsibilities.
  • Refer self-pay or underinsured patients to the Financial Navigation team for guidance on financial assistance.
  • Support POS collections by securing co-payments, deposits, and/or deductibles at arrival.
  • Utilize various work lists to assess the status of registration and financial clearance and ensure satisfactory completion within prescribed time frames.
  • Demonstrate a positive organizational attitude and commitment to patient experience.
