About The Position

The Patient Access Medical Assistant at Geisinger is responsible for providing front-line support in a clinical environment, focusing on direct patient care activities. This role involves greeting and registering patients, assisting with minor procedures, documenting patient information, and ensuring efficient office operations. The position requires coordination of patient check-in and check-out processes, as well as scheduling future appointments and managing patient inquiries.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related work experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care as directed by the licensed nurse within the medical assistant scope of practice.
  • Assists provider in setting up for minor procedures, gathering supplies and equipment, and applying aseptic dressings.
  • Obtains and accurately documents patient information using the electronic medical record.
  • Reinforces patient instructions to enhance understanding and adherence to treatment plans.
  • Collects and prepares lab specimens, completing associated paperwork to expedite laboratory studies.
  • Reports patient concerns and questions to appropriate care team members and follows through as directed.
  • Reports all patient safety incidents or issues immediately to the supervisor.
  • Inventories and orders supplies based on established inventory levels and checks for expired items.
  • Cleans equipment and prepares exam rooms between patients, performing high-level disinfection or sterilization as needed.
  • Performs duties of Patient Access Representative, including checking patients in for appointments and verifying demographics.
  • Assures all check-in procedures are completed and monitors patient wait times, communicating changes as necessary.
  • Reads and interprets insurance responses and assigns primary, secondary, and tertiary insurance per encounter.
  • Ensures patients receive necessary disclosure and privacy information, obtaining legal and financial signatures.
  • Completes patient visits by scheduling necessary follow-up appointments and processing multi-channel messages.
