Shift: First Shift (United States of America) Patient Access Manager Nebraska Medicine is seeking a Patient Access Manager to help lead the Access Operations team. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, remains calm under pressure, and brings a steady, level-headed approach to problem-solving. The manager will provide day-to-day operational oversight, support team performance, and foster a positive, growth-focused culture. A key part of this role is coaching and mentoring entry-level staff, helping them develop not only their skills but also their professionalism, confidence, and workplace habits to succeed and grow in their careers. This position includes oversight of all areas of Patient Access, including our 24/7 Emergency Department & Labor and Delivery, and requires flexibility to meet operational needs. The manager will maintain a consistent on-site presence and engage with weekend staff at least once per month through one-on-one check-ins. Leaders also participate in on-call responsibilities, including occasional pager backup, and must be prepared to step into operational duties as needed to ensure coverage and smooth workflow. Requirements

  • Minimum of five years revenue cycle, hospital finance, or call center required.
  • Minimum of two years management or leadership experience required.
  • High school education or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a business / medical related field required OR equivalent combination of education/experience combined (one year of education equals one year of experience) required.
  • Working knowledge of confidentiality laws, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, compliance issues, and third party payer billing edits required.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the application of system solutions to support operational needs required.
  • Must be proficient with equipment including computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access database required.
  • Experience with typical office equipment (e.g., scanning equipment, selected telephone systems, modems, audio/visual graphics input/output presentation equipment, and miscellaneous office supplies and equipment) required.
  • Demonstrate customer service skills required.
  • Demonstrate verbal and written communications skills required.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative nature and dedicated to team environment required.
  • Able to work with many leaders required.
  • Demonstrate ability with data gathering, analysis, and interpretation required.
  • Demonstrate analytical, organizational, and leadership skills required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 months of hire or transfer date required, must be from an American Heart Association (AHA) endorsed program (effective for new hires starting January 1, 2023, or later).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a healthcare call center environment preferred.
  • Experience with hospital admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT) and physician clinic operations preferred.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Master's degree in health information management, health administration, business, or healthcare related field preferred.
  • Strong mentoring skills preferred.
  • Certification through National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) or other professional organization preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the account related operations of the department through the functions of customer service, account creation, insurance verification, cashiering, point of service collections, patient financial counseling and patient way finding on a 24-hour basis.
  • Ensure patients are processed in a timely and efficient manner and accounts are created appropriately and correctly in order to optimize hospital cash flow, exceed customer expectations and comply with all state and federal regulations and laws as well as various other regulating bodies.
  • Manage financial counseling for the organization to support patient liability resolution through identifying available coverage, financial assistance or payment arrangements as appropriate.
  • Support department and organizational projects as requested.
