About The Position

The Patient Access Associate at Houston Methodist Hospital is responsible for accurately obtaining and entering patient demographic and insurance information into the electronic health record (EHR). This role involves cashiering functions, ensuring secure hospital accounts through the collection of co-pays and deductibles, and performing medical necessity checks to comply with Medicare guidelines. The position emphasizes effective communication and excellent customer service while adhering to healthcare regulations such as EMTALA and HIPAA.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (GED or partial post-secondary education).
  • Two years of experience in a strong customer service environment.
  • One year of registration experience in a hospital environment preferred.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients and co-workers with a customer service focus.
  • Knowledge of basic registration/access functions and insurance procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm in stressful situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a hospital environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical necessity criteria and insurance verification processes.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and record accurate demographic and insurance information from patients, family members, and physicians.
  • Explain consent forms and obtain necessary signatures while addressing any questions professionally.
  • Proactively seek solutions to patient issues and alert management to unusual situations affecting service levels.
  • Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of protected health information according to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Meet departmental goals related to registration error rates and productivity.
  • Collect payments and perform insurance verification to determine patient out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Accurately post and receipt patient payments, balancing the cash drawer daily.
  • Organize time effectively to minimize overtime and assist team members as needed.
  • Demonstrate initiative to improve job functions and adapt to changing demands.
