Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or graduate of an accredited histotechnology program.
  • ASCP certification as a histologic technician (HTL) or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of histology experience.
  • Functioning knowledge of anatomy, chemistry, physiology, and experience in enzymes histochemistry and immunoperoxidase stains.
  • Ability to perform accurate, reliable and high level work quickly and under pressure.
  • Good hand eye coordination and the ability to work with delicate instruments and automated equipment.
  • Able to function with minimal technical supervision.
  • Written and verbal communication skills, leadership potential.
  • Exercises good judgement in routine and non-routine situations.
  • Comprehends situations with minimal explanation.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction to staff and takes a lead role in training staff to perform competently.
  • Delegates technical responsibilities to staff and cross-trains them accordingly.
  • Schedules staff coverage within the department to provide highest quality and the most efficient patient service.
  • Provides guidance and training for technical processes and procedures as well as quality control procedures.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance activities.
  • Evaluates and resolves daily operational problems.
  • Addresses both clinical and patient complaints appropriately.
  • Assists supervisor as needed in departmental functions.
  • Writes and revises technical procedures, identifies problems and brings them to attention of supervisor.
  • Acts in place of supervisor during his or her absence.
  • Performs laboratory procedures as a histotechnologist.
  • Communicates all department problems in a timely manner to the Department Manager/Supervisor.
  • Assists in the creation and maintenance of a cohesive histology team-working environment.
