About The Position

This position manages, coordinates, and evaluates all elements of laboratory services in assigned specialties of the Laboratory in support of quality laboratory service and the hospital's mission of patient care. This position will lead the anatomic pathology laboratories including histology, cytology, & cytogenetics laboratories and autopsy services. These laboratories support the academic medical center as well as many of the WVUM system laboratories. Successful candidate should be well organized, an effective communicator, adept at process improvement and able to work in a fast-paced environment with a focus on outstanding patient care. In summer of 2026, the histology, cytology and cytogenetics laboratory will move to new state of the art lab space.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science), Histotechnology, Cytotechnology, chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science OR other Bachelor’s Degree that meets CLIA requirement as listed below: Have at least 120 semester hours that at minimum, includes either - 48 hours of medical laboratory technology courses 48 hours of science courses that include - 12 hours of general chemistry and biochemistry or organic chemistry 12 hours of biology, which must include biology and molecular biology or genetics 24 hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Histotechnologist, or Cytotechnologist by the ASCP or equivalent certifying body.
  • Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: OH: None PA: None WV: Medical Laboratory Scientist
  • Four (4) years Laboratory experience with one (1) year of experience in a supervisory position.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift or pull up to 25 pounds.
  • Cognizant of environmental factors, infection control issues and maintains a safe environment.
  • Often loud, noisy environment.
  • Ability to tolerate foul or unpleasant specimen odors.
  • Demonstrate competency in service to different patient populations such as; Neonates, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults and Geriatrics.
  • Knowledge in both medical technology and management principles.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Management.
  • Five (5) years laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the general management of the laboratory including fiscal responsibility and personnel management in support of the hospital's mission.
  • Responsible for the hiring, retention, interviewing, and recruitment of staff. Assists in orientation evaluations, promotions, salary recommendations, disciplinary action and termination of the staff as required. Oversees and participates in the orientation, training, and continuing education of the staff (departmental and interdepartmental) and other health related personnel.
  • Responsible for the development of and monitoring on a continual basis all personnel and current expense budgets providing information and/or justification of variances, (e.g., variance reports, budgets, inventory control).
  • Recommends and develops quality cost containment programs for the laboratory services, (e.g., staffing patterns, utilization etc.).
  • Responsible for departmental management decisions and shares management responsibilities. Participates in the development and review of policies and procedures for the departments.
  • Responsible for all laboratory functions in preparation for inspection by accrediting agencies, ensuring compliance and maintaining accreditation.
  • Assumes responsibility for the technical functions and supervision of designated laboratories. May delegate certain responsibilities such as reviewing results, counseling employees in a technical capacity, quality control, and general daily operation of section to Lead Technologists.
  • Coordinates the evaluation, purchase and implementation of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains effective communication within the laboratory with patients and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
  • Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in-service, etc.) to disseminate information to laboratory staff, physicians, nurses, and other allied health personnel by written and/or verbal means.
  • Oversees the development, evaluation, and implementation of policies, procedures and protocols as required. Initiates laboratory communication and insures that information concerning new policies and procedures is available to the technical and clerical staff in a timely manner and incorporated into routine policies and procedures.
  • Develops and reviews policies and procedures of the Laboratory to meet the Quality Assurance (QA) standards and accrediting bodies, for accomplishing the hospital's mission.
  • Reviews and evaluates quality assurance reports for legibility, completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness.
  • Assures the most economical utilization of time, materials and resources throughout all sections of the laboratory to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
  • Prepares and evaluates reports depicting department utilization and productivity as reflected by productivity reports.
  • Assures continuous personal and staff growth by attending workshops, reading professional journals, attending seminars, giving in-service, etc., as needed.
  • May direct and monitor the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision, and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine, and other health related fields.
