Requirements

  • Route 1: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program providing academic and practical training leading to either a master's degree or a bachelor's degree. The employee must be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Certification exam.
  • Route 2: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university in the field of health science, AND full time acceptable on the job training experience as a Pathologists' Assistant under the supervision of a pathologist certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology. The employee must be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Certification exam.
  • CPR/BLS certification preferred.
  • Knowledge with safety rules and regulations, management techniques, laws and the legal interpretations, which influence the practice of within the Laboratory and Pathology Department.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, pathology, medical terminology and physiology sufficient to identify, dissect, and describe certain surgical specimens. Knowledge of dissection, sectioning techniques and appropriate procedure of handling tissue. Demonstrated job knowledge of histopathologic techniques and methods.
  • Knowledge of methods used to obtain clinical history including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc. when indicated.
  • Familiarity with dictation and dictation equipment and computer are beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the Gross dissection of large and small surgical specimens, using standard dissection protocols, identifying and submitting pathologic tissues for histological processing and evaluation; obtaining and preparing samples for studies such as flow Cytometry, image analysis, cytogenetics, cultures, electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence.
  • Dictates accurate and precise gross descriptions for each specimen
  • Assist with dissection and tissue sampling of specimens sent for intra-operative consultation
  • Performs frozen work and reviews all frozen section reports as required by the Medical Director on a regular basis for quality assurance, with final review and assessment by pathologists.
  • Instructs pathology residents, fellows, and pathology assistant students in surgical pathology if applicable.
  • Responsible for maintenance of surgical pathology/cytology protocols, procedures, reports and data
  • Assure provision of adequate supplies for cleanliness of the surgical pathology area
  • Collects cases for quality assurance retrospective review and assists in preparation for Accreditation inspections such as (CAP, State of Ohio, HFAP, etc)
  • Maintains current certification and remain current in practice through continuing medical education
  • Assists in the coordination of Pathology conferences
  • Generates digital pictures of gross pathology and microscopic exam for tumor board meetings
  • Assists in accessioning duties in Pathology, and collection of specimens from hospital patient care areas and attains clinical history
