About The Position

HCA Healthcare is seeking a Pathologists Assistant to join their team. This role involves working closely with on-site Pathologists to ensure efficient workflow processes in the frozen section and gross examination areas. The Pathologists Assistant will be responsible for triaging specimens, dictating gross findings, and performing specialized procedures. The position requires a commitment to patient care and adherence to the organization's values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred.
  • Minimum three to five years' experience in a pathology histology laboratory setting.
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred.
  • 3-5 years grossing experience in a hospital setting accepted in lieu of ASCP Certification or Master's degree.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and ensure efficiency of workflow processes in the frozen section and gross examination areas.
  • Work closely with on-site Pathologists to determine grossing priorities.
  • Take instruction from on-site Pathologists regarding grossing technique and quality assessment.
  • Share relevant information with other HCA pathologist assistants to facilitate productivity and expand knowledge base.
  • Triage specimens received from surgery and dictate gross findings using appropriate terminology.
  • Select and identify tissue for microscopic study and determine proper fixative solutions.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification.
  • Maintain and coordinate specimen records for specialized procedures using appropriate protocols.
  • Submit requests for special histological procedures and stains when appropriate.
  • Maintain records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation.
  • Assist in compiling reports for surgical pathology and label/store gross tissue specimens.
  • Photograph specimen samples for instruction and documentation.
  • Perform photo microscopy on cases for interdepartmental conferences or teaching purposes.
  • Practice and adhere to the 'Code of Conduct' philosophy and 'Mission and Value Statement'.
