About The Position

Pathologists’ Assistant – Surgical Pathology Join a high-volume, academically driven Surgical Pathology team where you’ll practice at the top of your training. Working independently under the Technical Supervisor, you’ll perform complex gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens, prepare frozen sections, support autopsy services, and collaborate directly with pathologists at sign-out. This role offers strong teaching involvement — providing instruction to residents and Pathologists’ Assistant trainees — along with opportunities to support research, conferences, and advanced diagnostic studies. Ideal candidates bring strong clinical judgment, a commitment to quality and compliance, and experience in academic or high-complexity environments. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Clinical Pathology required or Master's Degree Pathologists' Assistant preferred
  • Related experience 1-2 years required
  • Extensive knowledge of human anatomy, tumor staging guidelines and medical terminology.
  • Extensive knowledge of how to approach wide variety of surgical specimens.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills in person, over the telephone, via e-mail, and other communication devices.
  • Knowledge of basic human pathology.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Dictates gross description and complete dissection of surgical specimens (i.e. type, size, weight, color and anatomical characteristics).
  • Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination.
  • Instructs both formally and informally pathology residents, PA students and medical students in the gross description, dissection, and sampling of surgical pathology specimens as well as frozen section specimens.
  • Assists in collecting and submitting tissue for a variety of needs, including controls, teaching, research and tissue/tumor banking.
  • Evaluates tissue to sample for frozen section, cuts and stains frozen sections adequately for telepathology review.
  • Oversees specimen storage in the surgical pathology area, keeps records and discards specimens as necessary.
  • Ensures that proper and legal authorization has been obtained to perform a postmortem examination.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
