About The Position

Under general supervision of the Medical Director or designee, assists in gross dissection and description of surgical specimens and provides other support duties related to Anatomic Pathology. The position involves assisting in the preparation and performance of human surgical tissue examinations, completing dissection and gross description of selected surgical cases daily, including inking and tumor staging. The role also includes selecting and submitting appropriate sections for routine microscopic examination and preparing photographic records of lesions or specimens for documentation, conferences, and/or publications as directed by the pathologist. Additionally, the position requires establishing and updating the surgical pathology grossing manual as required by CAP and other regulatory agencies. Depending on campus location, the role may involve assisting in human post-mortem examinations, collecting specimens, performing autopsies, and dictating records. The position also includes participation in quality improvement processes, data collection, and compliance with training and competency criteria.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or related science discipline.
  • Completion of a NAACLS accredited program.
  • CRT-Pathologist Assistant - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology upon hire required or CRT-Pathologist Assistant - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical tissue examinations.
  • Completes dissection and gross description of selected surgical cases daily, including inking and tumor staging.
  • Selects and submits appropriate sections for routine microscopic examination.
  • Prepares photographic record of lesions or specimens for documentation, conferences, and/or publications.
  • Establishes and updates surgical pathology grossing manual as required by CAP and other regulatory agencies.
  • Assists in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem examinations.
  • Collects routine sections of major organs and tissues for retention.
  • Performs autopsy including external exam, in-situ organ inspection, evisceration, and dissection.
  • Dictates records and discusses cases with assigned pathologist.
  • Assists pathologist in performing frozen section examinations.
  • Participates in quality improvement/process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys.
  • Teaches and assists lab assistants, fellows, residents, and other personnel as assigned.
