Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Graduate of an accredited (NAACLS) Pathologists' Assistant Training Program and American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification eligible OR three years of experience as a CC Pathologists Assistant Trainee.
  • Three years of Surgical Pathology experience, such as full-time experience performing non-waived testing for the required number of years or part-time experience performing non-waived testing, with 2080 hours equivalent to one year.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree.
  • Pathologists Assistant (PA) Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Responsibilities

  • Perform gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens for examination, holding and transport/shipment.
  • Assist with the preparation of freshly removed surgical specimens for cytologic studies.
  • Enter accession cases into the laboratory information systems.
  • Perform high complexity laboratory testing in a compliant manner according to direction.
  • Assume responsibility for and take action regarding any quality control or quality assurance issues.
  • Maintain instruments and equipment in accordance with specifications.
  • Perform proficiency testing in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant or Laboratory Director.
  • Recommend solutions and improvements.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Maintain the Surgical Pathology and related work areas.
