Position Overview: A Pathologist (AI/ML Diagnostics) will coordinate and contribute to Pictor Labs' histopathology research initiatives and play a pivotal role in advancing our regulatory evidence generation, product development, clinical validation efforts, and virtual staining panel development. Individuals in this role will work closely with AI/ML engineers to provide feedback and optimization of our proprietary virtual staining algorithms through evaluating and annotating virtual stains that are in development and providing constructive commentary on their improvement. She/he will use experience as a pathologist to advise appropriate translation of this technology into clinical and research histopathology settings and should be comfortable discussing our products with key opinion leaders or customers. Exposure to a wide variety of surgical pathology disciplines, experience with digital pathology, and interest in artificial intelligence / machine learning for medical product development is essential. Position Logistics: The role may be part time employee or consultant status with approximately 10-20 hours per week. Specific expectations can be negotiated with the candidate and company. This role reports to Director of Clinical Development.

Requirements

  • MD/DO with board certification or eligibility in Anatomic Pathology (ABP/AOBP) [Consideration of foreign medical training and pathology expertise is possible in lieu of US credentials]
  • Experience in digital pathology and interest in AI/ML is essential.
  • Strong understanding of tissue pathology across multiple organ systems.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • AI/ML Virtual Staining Panel Development
  • Collaborate in the scientific and clinical development and validation of virtual staining panels across multiple tissue types, disease states, and applications at a standard useful for regulatory submission and maintenance in US, EU, and other jurisdictions
  • Evaluate concordance between virtual and traditional staining methods and coordinate results / interpretations among other pathologists, AI/ML engineers, and company leaders
  • Provide pathological expertise in defining staining parameters and diagnostic criteria.
  • Collaborate with ML/AI teams and company leaders to ensure alignment between laboratory and computational initiatives.
  • Perform rigorous review of quantitative model performance metrics, including sensitivity, specificity, nuclei segmentation, quantitative tumor regions assessment, and concordance rates across different tissue types and clinical scenarios.
  • Conduct qualitative assessments of virtual staining outputs, providing expert pathological interpretation of model strengths and limitations in real-world diagnostic contexts.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary modeling review sessions integrating pathological expertise with ML/AI technical analyses to optimize virtual staining algorithms for clinical utility.
  • Assist in writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journal submissions or conference abstracts
  • External Collaboration
  • Serve as a medical authority in collaborations with BioPharma partners, academic institutions, and potential customers in development and commercial activities.
  • Build relationships with key opinion leaders in digital pathology and AI/ML diagnostics.
  • Participate in educational initiatives to promote virtual staining adoption.
