UTHealth Houston is Texas' resource for healthcare education, innovation, scientific discovery, and excellence in patient care. The position provides technical assistance in the areas of anatomical pathology through application and instruction under the direction of a primary care physician.

  • Responsible for complex clinical laboratory procedures which require experience and specialized training.
  • Supervises the Gross Room, the Frozen Section Area, and the morgue facilities.
  • Instructs residents and medical school students under faculty supervision as they dissect gross specimens.
  • Monitors specimens as they arrive in the gross room and assigns dissection to residents according to their expertise and workload.
  • Performs routine gross dissection as necessary in consultation with the attending physician.
  • Aids in the selection of tissue for research and routes them to the appropriate laboratory.
  • Conducts new employee orientation and training in autopsy techniques.
  • Supervises the maintenance of the autopsy/morgue facilities, equipment, and disposable supplies.
  • Develops and implements policies affecting the autopsy/morgue service.
  • Updates the Autopsy Service Procedural Manual and the autopsy/morgue service portions of the Nursing Manual and the Hospital Policy & Procedures manual.
  • Prepares quarterly quality assurance reports, monthly workload summary reports, and monthly autopsy service call schedules.
  • Supervises the Sophomore Pathology Gross Specimen Museum, selects new specimens, and ensures proper identification of each specimen.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Current American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification as a Pathologist Assistant.
  • Master's degree in Pathologist Assistant Studies with current certification and no experience, or a Bachelor's degree with current Pathologist Assistant certification and 2 years of experience.
