About The Position

The Pathologist Certified Assistant (PCA) at MedStar Health is responsible for performing gross pathology examinations and dissections of surgical and autopsy specimens. This role involves independently evaluating frozen section tissues obtained during surgery, determining appropriate sections for diagnosis, and preparing tissues for microscopic examination. The PCA contributes to departmental goals and adheres to quality and safety standards while ensuring efficient workflow in tissue processing.

Requirements

• Master's degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant Program or equivalent credentials (e.g., M.D., D.O.).
• 1 - 2 years of related experience preferred.
• ASCP certification as a Pathologist Assistant is required.
• Knowledge of human anatomy and macrosurgical techniques.
• Basic computer skills and proficiency in electronic communications tools.

Nice To Haves

• Certification by American Association of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA).
• Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with peers, patients, and physicians.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross pathology examinations and dissections of surgical and autopsy specimens.
• Independently evaluate frozen section tissue obtained at surgery.
• Select and identify tissue for microscopic study and determine proper fixative solutions.
• Dictate gross findings on selected specimens using appropriate terminology.
• Triages all specimens to ensure efficient tissue processing.
• Dictate preliminary gross anatomic pathology reports for review by pathologist.
• Dissect anatomic pathology specimens utilizing appropriate fixatives.
• Prepare tissues for microscopic examination, including frozen and permanent sections.
• Implement and monitor quality assurance procedures for the surgical cutting room.
• Ensure specimens are properly processed according to standard operating procedures.
