PATH Pals is a creative, child-centered outreach initiative of PATH designed to support emotional literacy, connection, and help-seeking among children. Through developmentally appropriate performances and interactive experiences, PATH Pals uses storytelling, puppetry, and imaginative play to help children explore feelings, build coping skills, and learn that trusted adults are ready to listen and help. PATH Pals programming may take place in schools, community settings, or other child-serving environments and is grounded in PATH’s values of providing access to life-sustaining services. PATH Pals offers a variety of volunteer roles based on interest, skills, and program needs, including but not limited to: Puppeteers and performers Stage management and technical support Performance support and logistics Program and event assistance All roles involve proximity to children and require a strong commitment to safety, boundaries, professionalism, and trauma-informed practice. Because PATH Pals works directly with children, all volunteers are required to complete and maintain the following prior to participation: A general background check indicating clearance to work with children An Illinois Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System (CANTS) check Child abuse and neglect background checks for any other state in which the volunteer has lived within the past five years , as required Completion of Mandated Reporter Training , with documentation of successful completion Clearance of all required background checks and completion of mandated reporter training are mandatory for participation in any PathPals activity.
