The position resides in the Intellectual Property Law Group and reports to the Patent Team Supervisor. This position will be based in Chevron’s facilities in Houston, TX. The Patent Agent is a quick decision maker operating in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will lead business units in developing and managing patents and other intellectual property to create competitive advantage for Chevron, and will support the mitigation and management of intellectual property risks to the enterprise. A Patent Agent collaborates with business unit managers and IP attorneys to design, adapt, and deploy strategies that will ensure appropriate management of Chevron's intellectual property and secure commercial value.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or comparable scientific discipline.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office in 2023 or earlier.
  • Works well in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills and judgment.
  • Able to initiate and maintain effective communications with researchers, business leaders, and legal colleagues.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or comparable scientific discipline.
  • Substantial experience (5+ years) independently drafting and prosecuting applications directed to inventions in the chemical arts, preferably in a law firm environment.
  • Experience in supporting landscape, patentability, freedom to operate, and invalidity assessments.
  • Experience in independently engaging with and providing IP counsel to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise and maintain authoritative technical knowledge of technologies for assigned technology area(s).
  • Lead and organize efforts to identify inventions and develop invention disclosures.
  • Assist inventors with the preparation and submittal of invention disclosures, instruct inventors in legal requirements for patentable inventions, and advise on research data needed to support patentability of inventions.
  • Develop and/or provide training on IP related topics.
  • Critically review and evaluate invention disclosures.
  • Perform technical analysis of inventions and conduct, direct, and evaluate patentability searches.
  • Develop and implement intellectual property strategies for managing innovations, intellectual property portfolios, and trade secrets for assigned technology area(s).
  • Maintain an understanding of third party patents relevant to Chevron's businesses, and assist IP attorneys with freedom-to-operate studies.
  • Exercise knowledge of U.S. and foreign patent laws and procedures.
  • Independently prepare, and oversee the preparation of, patent applications, and prosecute U.S. and foreign patent applications to maximize protection and value for inventions.
  • Conduct publication reviews for IP related considerations.
  • Provide technical support and expertise for IP related disputes, litigation, and administrative proceedings.
  • Lead and/or support patent portfolio reviews.
  • Collect patent filing statistics and other department metrics to assess performance of IP Legal support.
