About The Position

The position involves working as a patent professional specializing in the life sciences sector, particularly in areas such as molecular biology, genetics, and immunology. The role requires a strong research background and the ability to assess scientific literature and patents, draft patent applications, and provide insightful opinions on scientific data related to inventions. The candidate will collaborate with colleagues and clients, presenting complex scientific concepts clearly and effectively.

Requirements

• Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, or a related biological science.
• Research background in cell biology, gene therapy, structural biology, or immunology.
• USPTO or bar admission required; post-doc preferred.
• Knowledge of the life sciences industry.
• A business mindset and passion for the development of cancer therapies and vaccines.
• IP litigation experience or clerkship/judicial internship preferred for associates.
• Patent drafting and searching experience at a law firm for agents.
• Demonstrated skills in verbally presenting scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated scientific writing ability with proper grammar and vocabulary.
• Ability to analyze and explain abstract scientific concepts and synthesize literature into concise descriptions.
• Ability to differentiate and describe important differences among related scientific discoveries.
• Ability to balance and prioritize multiple competing responsibilities and be highly organized.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in patent litigation or prosecution in the life sciences sector.
• Familiarity with patent law and intellectual property rights.

Responsibilities

• Assess scientific literature, patents, and patent applications in various biology fields.
• Understand, critique, and provide insightful opinions on scientific data relating to inventions.
• Conduct comprehensive searches for scientific articles, patents, and patent applications relevant to inventions.
• Perform in-depth analysis comparing inventions with existing technologies.
• Identify essential elements, features, or components of inventions.
• Compose patent applications with a comprehensive background of the field, description of critical features, and a set of claims defining the invention.
• Draft responses to patent application rejections from the USPTO and other worldwide Patent Offices, providing detailed analysis and arguments for allowance.
• Conduct freedom-to-operate and patentability reviews and analyses on prior art references and patent documents.
• Prepare and review information disclosure statements for submission before the USPTO and foreign jurisdictions.
• Collaborate with colleagues on various projects and present ideas concisely.
• Work with clients in prosecuting patent applications and respond to inquiries about the prosecution process.
