About The Position

This position will report to the Head of Talent Acquisition, and at events will report to the Event Manager and/or the Area Lead(s). This position is responsible for observing and reporting violations and ensuring that events are run equitably. Individuals best suited for this position have experience working with youth, have strong attention to detail, and are strong communicators. They would need to have an excellent customer service approach, positive attitude, be comfortable with crowd control and public interaction, and must be very vocal and willing to direct volunteers, participants, and the public in a courteous, professional manner. Please note that shifts can range anywhere between 4 to 6 hours, depending on the length of the race. USATF Officials must be willing to be USATF certified or already hold the credential. If the candidate is not certified, NYRR will not provide training and thus the candidate must pay for certification themselves. Candidates can certify here.

Requirements

  • This position requires weekday and weekend availability, with worksites varying across boroughs.
  • Please note that shifts for Track and Field meets are typically 4 hours, between the hours of 9am-1pm. At races, shift lengths vary between the hours of 6am – 10pm, depending on the type and length of the event.
  • This role requires being comfortable outside in the elements, when not indoors.
  • Must have a strong customer service background; event experience in the sports and/or entertainment industries, is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced team-oriented environment. Must be proactive, responsible, attentive, hardworking, and professionally courteous to all runners, spectators, and patrons.
  • Must be able to follow directions and protocols to ensure that tasks flow seamlessly.

Responsibilities

  • Referee + Chief Finish Line Judge Determine if a rules violation has occurred and take appropriate action consistent with the applicable rules, including disqualification
  • Umpire Observe and report violations, impeding other runners, illegal assistance
  • Chief Timer Supervise the recording of all hand times taken
  • Timer Use stopwatch to record time at start/finish
