The Truancy Officer works collaboratively with school administrators, counselors, social workers, parents, and community agencies to promote regular school attendance. The officer enforces state compulsory attendance laws, identifies attendance issues, intervenes with students and families, and develops strategies to reduce absenteeism and truancy. The officer will facilitate school based attendance committee meetings/hearings.

  • Monitor and investigate student attendance records to identify cases of excessive absences or truancy.
  • Communicate with students, parents/guardians, and school staff to address barriers to regular attendance.
  • Conduct home visits, interviews, and meetings with families to resolve truancy-related concerns.
  • Enforce compulsory school attendance laws in accordance with state statutes and district policy.
  • Maintain accurate records of investigations, interventions, referrals, and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with school social workers, counselors, and community agencies to connect families with needed support and resources.
  • Prepare and submit truancy reports, documentation, and when necessary, appear in juvenile or district court.
  • Provide attendance improvement strategies, incentives, and preventative supports to encourage regular school participation.
  • Collaborate with the schools to develop and maintain an attendance committee.
  • Assist with student re-engagement efforts and transition plans for returning to school after long absences.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school district, families, and community-based organizations.
  • Participate in professional development to remain current on attendance laws, intervention strategies, and best practices.
  • High school diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Education, or related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in education, social services and/or working with families is desirable but not required.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
  • Must pass a background check and meet district/state employment requirements.
