The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is seeking a Part-Time Technologist C for its Jewelry Design program. This position is crucial for providing studio coverage and maintaining the metals fabrication labs, ensuring that both students and faculty have the necessary support and resources for their work. The role requires a highly technical skill set and a detail-oriented approach to ensure the safety and efficiency of the studio environment. The Technologist will be responsible for overseeing compliance with health and safety procedures, maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS), and monitoring the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials. In addition to safety compliance, the Technologist will demonstrate the proper use of equipment and materials to faculty and students, ensuring that all tools and machinery are in working order. This includes installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment as needed. The Technologist will also manage the borrowing of tools, maintain an inventory database, and respond promptly to faculty requests. Routine maintenance of studio chemicals and oversight of the sign-in/out log for students using the open studio are also key responsibilities. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying equipment needs and concerns, as well as conducting research and contacting vendors for supplies. The Technologist will assist with the setup and takedown of exhibits and events, and must possess a basic knowledge of various jewelry fabrication techniques, including laser and arc welding, 3D printing, and chemical processes related to jewelry and metalsmithing. This position is part-time, requiring 17.5 hours of in-person work per week, with a flexible schedule based on departmental needs.
