The Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Company’s regular full-time staff and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule YEAR-ROUND. As a Simulation Part-Time Student for Deere & Company World Headquarters located in Austin, TX, you will be within the John Deere Engineering organization. The work will entail building simulation infrastructure and testing, to push the tech stack in simulation to new frontiers. In this role you will work with embedded engineers, test engineers, automation engineers, and control engineers to tackle some of the most challenging problems at John Deere. You will use simulation to architect, optimize and develop the very best design possible for our customers. If you are interested in a challenging role that will provide you with an opportunity to directly work on the products that feed the world this would be a position for you. The work location will primarily be in Austin, TX but will collaborate with platform teams from various locations and product lines (such as Crop Harvesting, Crop Care, Tractors, and Intelligent Solutions Group).

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer/Software, Industrial, or Agricultural Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Must be registered as a full-time student at an accredited university.
  • Graduation date Spring of 2028 or later.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above.
  • 10 - 20 hours/week during the academic year.
  • 40 hours/week during the summer.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++
  • Familiarity with C# and Python
  • Effective communication skills both oral and written.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and inquisitive nature for resolving complex problems
  • Available to commute to the work location in Austin, TX, year-round

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge or work experience in production agriculture or construction equipment.
  • Experience in product engineering (product design, product testing, software testing).
  • Experience working with Software IDE’s (Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.)
  • Programming experience (MATLAB, C, C++, C#, Rust)
  • Data analytics experience (Python, R, SQL).
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, or Power BI.
  • Version Control Software (Git, Subversion)
  • CAN Communication Experience
  • Leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Simulation and Testing
  • Create and maintain Win32 Exe and DLL for embedded firmware validation
  • Develop Python-based test automation frameworks
  • Implement virtual CAN bus and I/O simulation tools
  • Build diagnostic and logging utilities for system validation as needed.
  • Port embedded code to Windows for Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing
  • Cross-Platform Integration and Testing
  • Ensure code portability between embedded targets and Windows environments
  • Develop conditional compilation strategies (ifdef WIN32)
  • Create and maintain build configurations for multiple platforms
  • Implement endianness conversion and data serialization routines
  • Debug communication protocol mismatches between platforms
