About The Position

The position is an internship within the Transportation Infrastructure Evolution department at MITRE, focusing on enhancing the National Airspace System (NAS) operations. The intern will support feasibility studies, technical solutions, and economic analyses related to wireless communications and electromagnetic spectrum systems. This role offers an opportunity to work on advanced concepts for communication, navigation, and surveillance, contributing to the safety and efficiency of aviation infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Rising college junior or senior enrolled full-time in an accredited degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of electromagnetic spectrum, wireless communications technologies, RF systems, and spectrum sharing solutions.
  • Familiarity with modern programming languages and modeling tools, simulation tools, and cloud environments.
  • Ability to code and analyze data, implement modeling and simulation of spectrum-based systems, and assess technical performance and interference issues.
  • Ability to perform economic analysis related to spectrum systems implementation and repurposing.
  • Sustained excellence in academic performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Past research experience in relevant areas of responsibility.
  • Experience in RF Engineering, signal processing, propagation analysis, and RF testing.
  • Technical understanding of key 5G capabilities such as massive MIMO, beamforming, and network slicing.
  • Proficiency with modern programming languages and modeling tools, simulation tools, and cloud environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated interest in serving the public.

Responsibilities

  • Support feasibility studies with a focus on wireless communications and electromagnetic spectrum systems engineering.
  • Support the implementation of technical solutions and research emerging technologies.
  • Conduct radio-frequency system performance assessments using modeling, simulation, and testing techniques.
  • Perform economic analyses, including estimating implementation costs and spectrum valuation efforts.
  • Use laboratory instrumentation to characterize communications systems and conduct tests and evaluations.
