About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, Hofstra University Public Safety Officers play a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position serves as a visible presence on campus, providing proactive patrols, responding to incidents and emergencies, and delivering certified first responder medical assistance. Officers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to community-oriented safety.

Requirements

Valid driver's license required.
Ability to maintain a NYS Security Guard License.
Ability to obtain and maintain a New York State First Responder Certification.
Ability to stand/walk on post for approximately 80% of assigned tour.
Ability to lift/carry a minimum weight of twenty (20) pounds.
Ability to walk up/down numerous flights of stairs.
Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and in inclement weather.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.

Nice To Haves

Experience working in a college or university setting preferred.
Familiarity with Jeanne Clery Act compliance and Title IX responsibilities is a plus.

Responsibilities

Conducts foot and vehicular patrols of campus buildings, grounds, parking lots, and adjacent areas to ensure safety and compliance with university policies.
Responds promptly to routine service calls, safety concerns, and emergency situations including fire alarms, medical emergencies, and suspicious activity.
Provides certified first responder-level medical assistance until emergency medical services arrive.
Assists with campus evacuations, lockdowns, and emergency notifications as part of the university's emergency management protocols.
Prepares clear and detailed incident reports, daily logs, and other documentation as required.
Enforces university policies and procedures through verbal warnings, referrals, and appropriate follow-up actions.
Offers safety escorts and assistance to members of the campus community.
Monitors security systems, including surveillance cameras and access control systems.
Supports special events and crowd control operations as directed.
Serves as a liaison between the university community and law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel.
Participates in ongoing training in de-escalation, CPR, first aid, and emergency response.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
