About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, Hofstra University Public Safety Officers play a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position serves as a visible presence on campus, providing proactive patrols, responding to incidents and emergencies, and delivering certified first responder medical assistance. Officers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to community-oriented safety.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to maintain a NYS Security Guard License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a New York State First Responder Certification.
  • Ability to stand/walk on post for approximately 80% of assigned tour.
  • Ability to lift/carry a minimum weight of twenty (20) pounds.
  • Ability to walk up/down numerous flights of stairs.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and in inclement weather.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a college or university setting preferred.
  • Familiarity with Jeanne Clery Act compliance and Title IX responsibilities is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts foot and vehicular patrols of campus buildings, grounds, parking lots, and adjacent areas to ensure safety and compliance with university policies.
  • Responds promptly to routine service calls, safety concerns, and emergency situations including fire alarms, medical emergencies, and suspicious activity.
  • Provides certified first responder-level medical assistance until emergency medical services arrive.
  • Assists with campus evacuations, lockdowns, and emergency notifications as part of the university's emergency management protocols.
  • Prepares clear and detailed incident reports, daily logs, and other documentation as required.
  • Enforces university policies and procedures through verbal warnings, referrals, and appropriate follow-up actions.
  • Offers safety escorts and assistance to members of the campus community.
  • Monitors security systems, including surveillance cameras and access control systems.
  • Supports special events and crowd control operations as directed.
  • Serves as a liaison between the university community and law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel.
  • Participates in ongoing training in de-escalation, CPR, first aid, and emergency response.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
