The Part-Time Professional Tutor in Math & Science at North Shore Community College is responsible for providing individualized and small-group tutoring sessions to students in various math and science courses. The role aims to support students in their academic journey, particularly in STEM subjects, by helping them develop effective study strategies and preparing for assessments. This position is non-benefited and offers flexible working hours up to 20 hours per week.

  • Tutor students taking math and science courses including algebra, statistics, calculus, biology, and chemistry.
  • Help students prepare for STEM assessments/tests (e.g. TEAS exam, Accuplacer placement tests).
  • Meet with students individually or in small groups as appropriate.
  • Encourage students to develop a systematic approach to studying that will serve them throughout their college career.
  • Help maintain records of student attendance and learning progress.
  • Attend required tutor and staff meetings throughout the semester and provide updates on student progress to TRIO SSS staff.
  • Assist students in making appointments and logging in/out of the center.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.
  • Bachelor's Degree required (in Math, Chemistry, Biology, education or other field related to area of assignment).
  • Experience tutoring and/or teaching Math such as algebra, statistics, and/or calculus, Chemistry or Biology.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate qualities of patience and empathy; respect for students of all genders, gender identities, cultural/ethnic/language backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
  • Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations (specifically first-generation, low-income, students with documented disabilities).
  • Computer proficiency in MS and Google Office Suite.
  • Ability to take initiative, be a self-starter preferred.
