About The Position

The Part-Time Professional Flight Nurse at UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is responsible for providing critical care to patients during transport via the STAT MedEvac system. This role requires advanced life support skills, independent judgment, and teamwork to ensure the safety and well-being of critically ill or injured patients. The Flight Nurse will work one 24-hour shift per week and must be available for rotating shifts.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Three years clinical experience in critical care and/or emergency department
  • RN applicants with two years of experience as a Flight/Critical Care Transport Paramedic may be considered
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam with height/weight restrictions
  • Eligibility to receive medical command authorization by the Medical Director
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to any STAT MedEvac base site
  • Ability to work productively in a complex environment and handle multiple priorities

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced life support to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care.
  • Participate in developing and completing research projects.
  • Reflect a positive attitude to the customer in a high-stress environment at all times.
  • Perform all assigned duties, including daily equipment checks and ensuring crew is logged onto the computer duty roster.
  • Demonstrate skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment.
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
  • Report for work well rested and fit for duty, adhering to the drug and alcohol policy.
  • Maintain a clean patient environment as well as crew quarters.
  • Participate constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program.
  • Ensure safe operation of patient-laden stretcher and maintain safe loading and unloading procedures.
  • Adhere to rules for scheduling, including schedule requests and availability.
  • Demonstrate competency related to pharmacological interventions.
  • Actively participate in the development and training of new staff.
  • Ensure the safety of patients and all others, utilizing appropriate safety channels to report concerns.
  • Collect and promptly process demographic and medical necessity billing information.
  • Select and use personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of anticipated hazard.
  • Complete all official documentation in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to the current uniform policy and ensure patient confidentiality.
  • Document appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a timely manner.
  • Establish rapport with customers and create a positive relationship regardless of circumstances.
  • Participate in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities.
