The work schedule will be 4 days/week April - mid-October 7 am - 3:30 pm and the focus will be on maintaining trails at Independence and Orion Oaks County Parks. Under direct supervision, performs routine duties involved in landscaping, improving and maintaining County grounds and parking areas including mowing and trimming lawns and planting, transplanting and maintaining flower beds. Assists higher level grounds employees in planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, laying sod, sowing grass seed, fertilizing trees, shrubs and lawns. Operates power groundskeeping and snow removal equipment and other County vehicles such as tractors and pick up trucks. Assists with various grounds construction projects. Responsible for performing snow removal and emergency duties on an on call basis. Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. Minimum Qualifications SUPERVISION EXERCISED May function as leader over a small crew of seasonal grounds maintenance employees. Instructs, assists and checks the work of employees. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Cuts and trims lawns using hand and power operated mowers and edgers to maintain appearance and health of lawns. Plants and maintains flower beds by digging, preparing the soil, watering, weeding, fertilizing and pruning the flowers to promote growth. Assists higher level grounds maintenance employees in planting, transplanting and maintaining trees, bushes and shrubs by digging and preparing the soil in the planting area and watering, weeding, fertilizing and pruning to promote growth of plants. Assists higher level grounds maintenance employees in establishing and maintaining lawns by preparing the soil, seeding, laying sod, fertilizing, watering and raking lawn areas. Maintains grounds machinery and equipment such as lawnmowers, tractors and hand tools by checking fluid and oil levels, tire pressure, sharpening mower blades and following other prescribed procedures to ensure efficient, safe operation. Removes snow and ice from parking lots and sidewalks using salt and hand and power snow removal equipment including shovels, snowblowers and plows. Participates in landscape construction and repair projects such as: earth moving, drainage, terracing grounds, patching cracks and holes in pavement, sealing asphalt, placing bumper blocks, and sign installation and maintenance. Collects and removes debris and litter from County grounds to the proper disposal location Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES Support efforts to ensure appropriate maintenance plans and stewardship practices to build public support for Oakland County Parks & Recreation’s Natural Resources Stewardship Program and landscape maintenance practices. ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to work outside year round. Ability to operate landscaping equipment and use landscaping tools. WORKING CONDITIONS Works in an outdoor environment with exposure to heat, cold and other weather elements. Other duties and responsibilities will be assigned by the supe EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES A. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Be at least 16 years old and a high school graduate; OR have completed the State requirements for a G.E.D. certificate; OR be an emancipated minor; OR have passed their 18th birthday. 2. Have at least six (6) months of full-time work experience in all aspects of Groundskeeping, including turf care and assisting in planting, pruning, and fertilizing flowers, trees, and shrubs. 3. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license. 4. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this class. 5. Successfully complete the six month probationary period. Additional Minimum Qualifications B. ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS 1. Be a high school graduate or equivalent. 2. Reasonable ability to understand and follow written and oral directions. 3. Reasonable ability to use and care for groundskeeping hand tools and powered equipment. 4. Physical condition that would permit performing manual duties out‑of‑doors for extended periods in both very hot and very cold temperatures. 5. Resistance or tolerance to sun poisoning and the adverse effects of insect and spider bites. 6. Reasonable ability to maintain personal cleanliness and a presentable public appearance. 7. Reasonable interest in groundskeeping work with the ability to learn new techniques. 8. Reasonable ability to work & cooperate in a team effort, when necessary, to successfully complete an assignment. 9. Willingness to adjust personal time to fit work needs when necessary. 10. Some groundskeeping or landscaping experience.
