About The Position

This position ensures that Correctional Health Services (CHS) can fulfill its mission of providing medically necessary, evidence-based, integrated health care to women and pregnant patients going through the judicial system. It ensures that CHS responds to urgent medical needs, provides necessary continuity of care services for women and pregnant patients with chronic care conditions, and provides appropriate medical services that may arise during a patient’s stay in the county jail system. Please note this is a part-time position at 20 hours a week.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree from an accredited School of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine
  • Completion of an approved U.S. Residency and Board Certification in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Arizona from the Arizona Medical Board or the Arizona Osteopathic Board
  • Must be able to work inside a jail and stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time throughout the shift while accurately handling a high volume of work, communicating with a culturally diverse patient population, and adapting to frequent changes, interruptions, and unscheduled tasks
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies
  • Must maintain CPR certification and get on the floor to perform CPR/chest compressions, push medical equipment, climb stairs, and lift patients on a gurney
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint background check and maintain MCSO jail access
  • Must successfully complete a fingerprint background check
  • Must possess a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certification
  • Must be able to obtain a Physician Dispensing Certificate Registration
  • Must obtain and maintain Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) knowledge and hands on certification
  • Must pass a pre-employment background and/or fingerprint investigation as required by statute or policy, including drug and alcohol testing requirements for positions designated as safety-sensitive

Responsibilities

  • Obtains history and completes physical examinations of patients incarcerated in Maricopa County Jails
  • Evaluates and treats patients as medically indicated in compliance with CHS Policies and Procedures
  • Documents patient encounters according to CHS protocols in a SOAPE format in the progress notes or on the appropriate CHS clinical form
  • Develops and updates individualized treatment plans for patients with chronic conditions or special needs, specifically related to women’s health and prenatal care
  • Orders onsite lab work, treatments, and medications as medically indicated
  • Refers to outside specialists, outside diagnostic studies, and other outside services as medically indicated
  • Knowledge of substance abuse, intoxication, and withdrawal, and communicable diseases
  • Performs minor procedures such as sutures, incision and drainage of abscesses, simple splints, punch biopsies, and pelvic exams
  • Works alternative shifts in the clinical setting as needed
  • Communicates information and ideas effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Provides education in a manner that enhances one to learn about their disease or chronic condition
  • Manages time appropriately to complete multiple job tasks efficiently and at times simultaneously, which includes delivering direct patient care, managing questions from nursing staff, and completing queue work in the electronic health record
  • Knowledge of quality control, management, and assurance processes
  • Skilled in encouraging and building mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other medical professionals, nursing professionals, and administrative staff
  • Takes periodic after-hours calls for the patients in Maricopa County Jails
  • Participates in peer review, in-service training, quality improvement processes, and other meetings necessary to improve patient care
  • Maintains applicable licensure and skills according to the requirements by State law, Department policies, and licensure agencies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with applicable standards, regulations, statutes, and departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to comply with County policies and procedures related to the safekeeping of Protected Health Information (PHI)
  • Supervises Physician Assistants as assigned by the Medical Director
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Medical Director, Assistant Medical Director, Mental Health Director, or other designees
