About The Position

The Stress, Trauma, Adversity, Research, and Treatment (START) Department of Psychiatry has an opening for a part-time .2 FTE Occupational Therapist. The START Center at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, nurse practitioners, and licensed professional counselors who offer psychotherapy and medication management for people who have experienced or may currently experience psychological trauma.

Requirements

  • Adjoint Instructor: 1-3 years of related clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.
  • Current and unrestricted Occupational Therapist – Colorado State Licensed (OTR/L)
  • Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • The occupational therapist should have additional training in at least one of the following: sensory processing, trauma informed care, and use of relationship-based models in therapy within 4 months of hiring.
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) and Taxonomy code required at time of hire
  • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the Master’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with faculty, staff, students, alumni, industry and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Knows and applies best practices in diversity and inclusion practices or has knowledge and understands cultural differences.
  • Knowledge regarding clinical research regulations and principals of ethical conduct.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, residents, students, alumni, and administrative personnel at all levels including outside organizations and the public.
  • A demonstrated ability to organize and complete complex projects and to work under tight deadlines.
  • Clinical skill is required for conducting brief and targeted assessments in integrated care settings to provide short-term psychotherapy interventions, health and behavior change and triage for appropriate level of care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clinical faculty and staff in psychiatry.
  • Strong commitment to inter-professional, team-based care in psychiatry and both primary and specialty health settings.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.

Responsibilities

  • The primary responsibility of the occupational therapist is to provide services for individuals across the age range including 2 years to 65 years old.
  • The occupational therapist would be responsible for providing direct treatment, caregiver training, and would collaborate on research studies focused on occupational therapy’s role on working with kids who have experienced trauma.
  • Meets the patient’s goals and needs and provides quality care by assessing patients with trauma and culturally informed evaluations and determining occupational therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians or by prescription.
  • Assesses for potential developmental delays and helps patient develop skills to adjust to any potential developmental delays.
  • Develop assessment reports that consider and incorporate the impacts of chronic early life stress and are culturally relevant
  • Implements programs involving manual arts and crafts, practice in functional, and homemaking skills and fosters activities of daily living as is appropriate developmentally and culturally.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Promotes maximum independence by selecting and constructing therapies according to individual’s physical capacity, intelligence level, and interest.
  • Evaluates results of occupational therapy by observing, noting, and evaluating patient’s progress and recommending and implementing adjustments and modifications.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team to deliver report results and treatment recommendations and work across systems of care to promote comprehensive treatment of children, including collaboration with medical, educational, and child welfare professionals.
