About The Position

The Zion Park District is seeking a Part Time Maintenance staff member that will make a valuable contribution to the District’s maintenance team. This is an excellent opportunity to utilize your general maintenance skills in the Parks and Recreation industry and contribute to the community. The Zion Park District is a local government entity that encompasses ten square miles, manages over eight hundred acres of park land, operates six major facilities, including two golf courses, and proudly serves a community of over 24,000 residents. Part-Time Maintenance staff are responsible for duties relating to all aspects of building and parks maintenance within the District and will complete essential functions that cover a wide array of manual labor tasks to support all park district operations, programs, events, parks and facilities. Responsibilities vary on a daily basis, require strong communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills, with a focus on operating safely, and require a high level of integrity and self-motivation.

Requirements

  • Some knowledge of grounds and building maintenance practices is desired.
  • Working knowledge of safety procedures, ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Most duties are recurring in nature and performed at the direction of the Superintendent of Parks and/or Park Maintenance full-time personnel.
  • Scheduled hours may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
  • Hours will vary per week and scheduled as needed.
  • This position will be required to work on Saturday.
  • Vision: to operate power equipment, identify unsafe acts, and observe jobs that need to be accomplished, read instructions or assignments and drive
  • Hearing: for safety awareness, to communicate with other employees and supervisors
  • Speaking: to communicate with public and other employees to accomplish tasks
  • Sitting: to operate mowers, tractors, and trucks (may require long periods)
  • Walking: to get from location to location in a reasonable amount of time and to perform duties
  • Hand work: to operate hand tools, power equipment, to write instructions, to drive, to hold/climb ladders
  • Bend, stoop, and lift: load trucks, lift equipment, move supplies from building to building with a maximum weight up to 100 lbs.
  • Pushes and pulls: to operate power equipment and hand tools, open and close doors and operate transportation devices
  • Climbing: to climb in and out of vehicles and equipment, climbing ladders to roof tops, climbing steps and bleachers to perform duties
  • Read and understand rules and safety labels on containers
  • Follow verbal and written rules and job instruction
  • Demonstrate good safety awareness and judgment
  • Respond to public, patrons, and staff in a polite and courteous manner
  • Identify regular and routine tasks and accomplish without supervision
  • Work outside in hot summer weather
  • Work outside in cold winter weather
  • Work outside in damp conditions
  • Work with chemicals
  • Work hours as required – Days, Nights, Weekends - 32 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Self starter – Must arrive at work on time and ready to work as assigned.
  • Operate Park District vehicles – To travel between locations and transport equipment or supplies.
  • Effectively communicates with supervisor, other park employees and the public.
  • Follow general safety practices and policies as set by Park District
  • Clean washrooms, gymnasiums, floors and other interior spaces
  • Pick up litter and debris, empty garbage cans in parks and buildings.
  • Operate power mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, snow blowers, tractors, trimmers, chain saws, and other gas powered equipment.
  • Assist with set up of special events (tents, bleachers, signs, lighting)
  • Move tables and chairs to set up room rentals - up to 20lbs
  • Trim trees and remove debris. Work with power chipper.
  • Use hand tools – garden rake, shovels, brooms, etc.
  • Remove graffiti from building exteriors, washrooms, and parks
  • Move snow, dirt, gravel, etc.
  • Assist with playground maintenance, including spreading mulch & pulling weeds
  • Spray weeds – (if licensed)
  • Read and understands labels and handle chemicals
  • Unload and load trucks by hand – up to 100 lbs
  • Other general maintenance duties as assigned
