About The Position

Sonoma State University, founded in 1960, is one of the 22 campuses of the California State University System, located on a 274-acre campus in Sonoma County wine country, an hour north of San Francisco. It is acknowledged in the top 10 Nursing programs in the country, having surpassed its 50th year of educating nurses. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences offers a variety of campus-based programs, fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the California State Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). These programs include a traditional pre-licensure BSN, post-licensure BSN, and MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner, with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program currently under development. Students are prepared to practice in diverse settings, including community health agencies, advanced practice settings, and acute care, with a focus on underserved communities. The School maintains active community partnerships for clinical rotation sites and service-learning opportunities. The faculty's collective core values guide their nursing philosophy and pedagogy.

Requirements

  • For Prelicensure Undergraduate Teaching: A Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing (Master's preferred) and one (1) year of full-time continuous experience in the last five (5) years as a Registered Nurse providing direct patient care in the area assigned to teach or one (1) academic year of RN-level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area.
  • For Prelicensure Undergraduate Teaching: Current and unencumbered RN license issued by the CA BRN.
  • For Prelicensure Undergraduate Teaching: Appointment is subject to CA BRN approval.
  • For Prelicensure Undergraduate Teaching: Current and valid CPR/BLS certification and immunizations as required by the clinical agency.
  • For Prelicensure Undergraduate Teaching: Demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of college students and the campus community.
  • For Post-licensure Undergraduate Teaching: A Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing (Master's preferred) and one (1) year of related professional experience.
  • For Post-licensure Undergraduate Teaching: Current and unencumbered RN license issued by the CA BRN.
  • For Post-licensure Undergraduate Teaching: Current and valid CPR/BLS certification.
  • For Post-licensure Undergraduate Teaching: Demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of college students and the campus community.
  • For FNP Program Graduate Level Teaching: A Master's or Doctorate degree in Nursing or related field and national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • For FNP Program Graduate Level Teaching: At least (1) one year of current and related nurse practitioner experience.
  • For FNP Program Graduate Level Teaching: Current and unencumbered RN and NP license issued by the CA BRN.
  • For FNP Program Graduate Level Teaching: Current and valid CPR/BLS certification.
  • For FNP Program Graduate Level Teaching: Demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of college students and the campus community.

Responsibilities

  • Providing effective classroom, clinical or laboratory instruction using methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter and learners.
  • Preparing and grading class assignments and examinations.
  • Assisting and evaluating students, supporting students with accommodations, evaluating learning outcomes and maintaining regular office hours.
  • Participating in program activities including curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation, and decision making as well as the development of new teaching-learning methods and materials as outlined by the Board of Registered Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
  • Contributing to development of program policies and procedures.
  • Representing program, maintaining, and developing clinical partnerships for the hospital/community/primary care placements as an ambassador for positive representation of Sonoma State University School of Nursing.
  • Meeting with managers and staff in agencies for orientation and coordination of instruction.
  • Ongoing evaluation of student clinical competencies following course and program objectives and adhering to policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring that all records are collected and maintained as required by CA BRN, CCNE, and University policies.
  • Participating in course, team, program and departmental meetings and professional development activities in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely student records as required.
  • Maintaining currency and depth of knowledge in assigned content and or practice area of responsibility.
  • Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to collaborate and receptive to feedback.
