About The Position

The Part-Time Groundskeeper works under the supervision of the Facilities Superintendent to provide maintenance services on campus roads and grounds including wooded areas at East Campus and assigned satellite sites; provides snow and ice removal; mows and trims grass, maintains Ag Center Waste Management Composting operation; provides other maintenance, custodial, and facilities services as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or recognized equivalent required.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds on a regular basis required.
  • Ability to follow instructions with minimum supervision required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others required.
  • Knowledge of mechanical maintenance or an interest in maintenance type work required.
  • Ability to work under difficult conditions including outdoors in inclement weather required.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow operation manuals required.

Nice To Haves

  • Agriculture or horticulture background preferred.
  • One year experience in grounds keeping preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains Campus and satellite site roadways, lots, and pathways.
  • Performs all outdoor grounds maintenance, mowing, irrigation, landscaping, pest disease control measures: inclusive of all trees, shrubbery, plants, etc.
  • Performs first level maintenance on all grounds equipment, vehicles, operation logs, and service records.
  • Performs snow removal and salt spreading and utilizing all appropriate equipment and outdoor assignments during winter months.
  • Installs and repairs sod; seeds; applies fertilizer, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides.
  • Performs general tree maintenance.
  • Performs emergency acetylene welding repairs on vital equipment.
  • Assists with outside lighting systems, electrical junctions, conduit removal or installs and erects scaffolding.
  • Operates power equipment, heavy equipment, and hand tools while observing College safety procedures.
  • Works overtime hours as needed.
  • Maintains a valid Illinois driver's license.
  • Secures general instructions from Facilities Superintendent and Assistant Facilities Superintendent and proceeds with work assignments.
  • Coordinates and plans moving of College equipment; assembles equipment as needed.
  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies.
  • Builds and constructs items for the department.
  • Coordinates the removal of recycling materials, including delivery of materials; maintains records on program and implementation progress and coordinates recycle persons.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
